Abdominal Pain is Telling You Something

It isn’t unusual to have a tummy ache now and then. This symptom is usually a minor and temporary frustration. However, for some people, abdominal pain may occur with increasing frequency or severity. When the intensity of abdominal pain rises over time, one may just get used to it. The discomfort feels like their norm. Ongoing or severe abdominal pain is not normal. It can be cause for concern and should be checked out by a doctor. The team at Gramercy Park Digestive Disease Center has the knowledge and experience to conduct a thorough examination in search of answers. Here, we discuss some particulars about abdominal pain and what it may mean.

Abdominal discomfort can mean different things depending on where within the abdomen pain is occurring. The abdominal area is large and includes several vital organs. A doctor observes location with a discerning eye to help reach an accurate diagnosis for pain.

Localized Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain that is isolated on one side or the other could indicate an organ-related problem. For example, lower right-sided abdominal pain could indicate a problem with the appendix. Upper right-sided abdominal pain could be due to a gallbladder condition.

Lower Abdominal Pain

Pain may occur in the lower abdomen as a result of constipation. In most cases, constipation pain feels like cramping and fullness. It is usually temporary and correctible with laxatives, increased fluid intake, or medication. If lower abdominal pain lasts more than a few weeks, a medical examination should be scheduled.

Middle and Upper Abdominal Pain

Pain in the mid to upper abdomen may be caused by heartburn. This area of the abdomen is where the stomach and esophagus connect. A consultation and examination should be scheduled if pain does not improve with antacids or if it occurs several times a week for more than a week or two. Ongoing heartburn can damage the esophagus. Medical treatment may include prescription-strength antacids or medication for acid reflux.

Duration and Severity

Severe abdominal pain is a reason to seek urgent medical care even if the symptom has never occurred in the past. Prompt medical care should also be sought if abdominal pain occurs alongside other symptoms, such as:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever
  • Abdominal swelling or tenderness
  • Bloody stools
  • Shortness of breath
  • Yellowing skin or eyes
